The Leadership of President Prof. Hassan Al Alkim
Professor Hassan Hamdan Al Alkim was appointed by the AURAK Board of Trustees on August 23, 2011 to the position of President. He is a native of Ras Al Khaimah with over 30 years of instructional, research and academic administration experience in universities in the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Middle East. Professor Al Alkim, a professor of International Relations, holds a bachelor’s degree in science in Political Science from Seattle University (USA) and a Master of Arts degree and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Exeter, UK. Professor Al Alkim received senior executive higher education leadership in Oxford, UK and attended several leadership and management training workshops within the UAE, France, and Malaysia. He has received numerous awards including a Fulbright Scholarship, supervised several Masters and PhD students and visiting scholars, and served as an examiner for graduate students in international relations. Professor Al Alkim has published 28 articles and five books on a variety of topics in international relations related to the Arab region and has attended over 35 international academic, accreditation, and leadership conferences.
Professor Al Alkim is the principal visionary and inspirational and transformational leader at AURAK. His approach to leadership is influenced by his faith, vision, values, and respect for leaders within and outside the university he oversees. Being a man of modesty and humility, he sees himself as the first among equals, where he empowers his leaders to lead but holds them accountable for agreed upon strategic outcomes. He is passionate about higher education development within the UAE and the region and has a strong commitment to encourage others to adopt best practices, accomplish educational excellence, and ensure compliance with quality standards. Professor Al Alkim ascribes to the concept of building world-class universities that are based on models of excellence characterized by effective governance, abundance of resources, and exceptional talent. Since becoming President of AURAK in 2011, Professor Al Alkim has led the university through several key strategic changes, development pathways, and projects that have increased its reputation among students, alumni, employers, regulators and accreditors, local and federal government entities, and the international community.
